Activities: Picnic in Central Park, stroll the halls of the MET, Ride a Citibike Down the West Side Highway for stunning city views, grab a cocktail at a bustling rooftop bar (or head over to Williamsburg to Westlight for stunning city views), and sit back and enjoy a Broadway show.
2. London, UK
A Blend of History, Elegance and Modernity
London is a city that perfectly balances its rich history with a vibrant, modern lifestyle. It's a haven for solo travelers with its diverse neighborhoods and myriad attractions.
Why do I love London as a Solo Trip?
London was both my first solo travel experience and the first time leaving the US, so it’ll always have a special place in my heart. London is a great city to get lost in - the unique neighborhoods and the beauty of the metropolis will take days to explore. Even in the rain, there’s no getting bored in London.
Why Should You Try London?
Cultural Richness: Museums, theaters, and historical landmarks abound.
Language: English-speaking, which is convenient for many travelers.
Transport: The London Underground is efficient and easy to navigate. Download Citymapper to plan your route since there is not always service on the Tube.
Safety: Generally safe, especially in central areas.
Must-See Spots: The colored houses of Notting Hill, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, and a stroll along the South Bank.
3. San Sebastián, Spain
A Coastal Gem for the Foodie
For those seeking a more relaxed and scenic solo trip, San Sebastián offers beautiful beaches, world-renowned cuisine, and a welcoming atmosphere.
Why do I love San Sebastián as a Solo Trip?
Traveling alone for the first time and deciding how to spend your free time can be intimidating! Luckily in San Sebastián, you don’t have to wander far to fill your time. The seaside town is home to many amazing Michelin-starred restaurants - immersing in amazing cuisine and treating yourself to a tasting is a delitable way to pass the afternoon. I found restaurants in the town to be more affordable than US-standards, but for the budget-conscious, book a lunch tasting for a discount.
Why Should You Try San Sebastián?
Culinary Delights: Famous for its pintxos (tapas) and Michelin-starred restaurants.
Scenic Beauty: Gorgeous beaches like La Concha and Ondarreta.
Walkability: Easy to explore on foot, especially the charming Old Town.
Safety: Known for being safe and tourist-friendly.
Top Experiences: Sunbathe on La Concha Beach, surf the Basque coast at La Zurriola, hike Monte Igueldo for stunning views, and indulge in local pintxos bars and Michelin tastings.
4. Sydney, Australia
The City with the Beach
Sydney is an excellent choice for solo travelers seeking both urban excitement and natural beauty. It combines stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and iconic landmarks.
Why Do I Love Sydney as a Solo Trip?
I loved Sydney so much after visiting in November of 2019 that I applied for a Visa and planned to move there in 2020…timing was not on my side for that one given the lockdown, but I will always remember how excited I was given the livability of Sydney. The ease and safety of taking public transport from beautiful Bondi Beach to the downtown and a ferry over to Manly blew my mind! Sydney is a great mix of it all, from health and wellness to party, there’s something for everyone.
Why Should You Try Sydney?
Friendly Locals: Australians are known for their hospitality.
Beaches: Bondi and Manly beaches are perfect for sun and surf.
Landmarks: The Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge are must-sees.
Safety: Sydney is generally safe with a low crime rate.
Don't Miss: A ferry ride to Manly, the coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee, a sunrise swim at the Bronte Bath Ocean Pool and explore the Royal Botanic Garden.
5. Boston, USA
Small-Town City Vibes With A Blend of Academia and History
Boston offers a unique mix of historical significance, academic prestige, and a welcoming atmosphere, making it ideal for solo travelers.
Why Do I Love Boston as a Solo Trip?
If you haven’t spent much time alone in a city, Boston is a great place to start. Once you spend a period of time in ‘Beantown’ you’ll realize it feels like more of a big town than a major metropolis. Smaller in scale and very safe, Boston is great to explore on foot; I’ve walked all the way from the Seaport to Fenway and beyond - which is more or less the entire span of the city. Given the amount of colleges within and around the city that bring in a young, international crowd, you’ll find that you’re not the only one exploring on your own.
Why Should You Try Boston?
History: Walk the Freedom Trail to explore America's past.
Education Hub: Home to Harvard and MIT, which adds a youthful, vibrant feel.
Walkability: Compact and easy to explore on foot.
Safety: Generally safe, with a focus on tourist areas.
Must-Do Activities: Visit the Museum of Fine Arts, take a stroll along Newbury Street through Boston Common, and grab a cannoli at Mike’s Pastries in the vibrant North End.
Bonus: Buenos Aires, Argentina
The Paris of South America
Buenos Aires is an exciting and culturally rich city that offers a unique solo travel experience with its European charm and Latin flair.
Why Do I Love Buenos Aires as a Solo Trip?
Like most traveling to Buenos Aires for the first time, I was blown away by the city. The food, the culture, the architecture, the energy and flare of BA are truly unique. While I recommend making a reservation, especially at spots like Don Julio, it is fairly easy to get into some of the world’s best restaurants. While non-Spanish speakers may be intimidated to choose the South American country as their first solo trip, I can confidently say to eliminate the hesitation. Argentines are the most welcoming people and take such pride in their country, locals you meet will ensure you have the best experience possible.
Why Should You Try Buenos Aires?
Cultural Scene: Tango music, dance, and lively neighborhoods.
Affordability: Generally more budget-friendly than many European or North American cities.
Language: While Spanish is the main language, many locals speak some English.
Diverse Experiences: From vibrant nightlife to historic sites.
Highlights: Visit the colorful La Boca district (try to go to a game at the vivacious La Bombonera), explore the Recoleta Cemetery, enjoy a tango show in San Telmo or the opera at the stunning Teatro Colón.
Conclusion
Each of these cities offers something unique for solo travelers, whether it's the vibrant energy of New York, the historical charm of London, the culinary delights of San Sebastián, the natural beauty of Sydney, the academic allure of Boston, or the cultural richness of Buenos Aires. Choose a destination that aligns with your interests and comfort level, and you'll be sure to have an unforgettable solo adventure.
